You need to be creative and aggressive in building a career in music. If you are passionate about taking your music to the next level, here are some ideas as to how you can successfully pursue music as a career:
1. Networking (go to conferences, attend concerts, become friends with your classmates, and get to know professors and advisors etc).
2. Research potentials careers in music (i.e. music teacher, music therapy, music consultant etc).
3. Collaborate with other instrumentalists. Play in ensembles.
4. Take electives outside of music (i.e. arts management, creative writing, literature, and foreign languages).
5. Enroll in useful music classes (i.e. piano pedagogy, conducting, theory, history etc.)
6. Read about the current issues in Arts.
7. Develop musical, personal and business skills that will set you apart from other pianists.
8. Contact people in the music/arts-related field. Get to know what they do, how they got to where they are, and learn about the field.
9. Start making a list of potential careers for yourself. Long term and short term goals.
10. Figure out your strengths and weaknesses. Start using your strengths in different ways and begin to build your weakness. (i.e. If you are a good sight reader, think about doing gigs, accompanying, or how you can teach a sight reading class! If you are not a great sight reader, ask how good sight readers read, take sight reading courses, read material on how to sight read well).
**Be open-minded and more opportunities will come your way! |

I would like to reiterate to "enroll in useful music classes." This was the best advice I was ever given and it has served me very well in my career. I took a "risk" and enrolled in piano pedagogy and found out I loved teaching class piano something as an organ major I didn't think I would like in the least.
I ended up teaching class piano at a university for years. I got to help many students discover the joy of music and share in their joy as they learned to play the piano. Many delightful years thanks to enrolling in a "useful music class."
